UP Schools To Encourage Gender Equality This Women’s Day

Encouraging gender equality and girl child education through curricular activities.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • UP schools schedule an elaborate lineup of events ahead of Women's Day as a part of Mission Shakti.

  • Parents will be asked to take a pledge of taking proper care of their daughter’s education.

Gender equality has always been a topic of great concern in India. The Uttar Pradesh government will be taking a step ahead to raise awareness about gender equality across the state from February 27 under the Mission Shakti campaign. The departments have planned several events to celebrate International Women's Day, on March 8.

The educational institutes have undertaken an initiative to speak out loud the ideas of equality among all the people through a parent's meet and several other programs, stretching up till the 8th of March.

Mission Shakti To Promote Gender Equality

Under the campaign Mission Shakti, specially curated events and co-curricular activities will be carried out in schools, spreading the message of gender equality. Directives have been issued to all district basic education officers by the basic education department.

The BSA’s have been informed to hold abhibhavak chaupals (parents’ meet) at schools to promote parity between a girl and boy child. Similar meets will also be held at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), a residential setup for girls from weaker sections.

During these meets/chaupals, the parents will be encouraged to educate their girl child, send them to schools every day, provide them a proper environment to study at home, and give them the freedom to pursue a career of their own choice. Besides this, students and children will also be made aware of the government helpline numbers.

Awareness Through Co-Curricular Activities

UP schools aim to stimulate young brains to adapt to contemporary themes such as gender equality through interesting and friendly activities. Beginning from February 27, events like poster competition on issues such as gender discrimination, child marriage, etc, quiz rounds, presentation of nukkad nataks (street plays), and other programs will be held at the UP schools.

Not only this, the students of classes 6 to 8 along with teachers and staff will be conducting a rally on March 4 to promote menstrual hygiene, breaking the taboo around the concept, especially in rural regions. On March 5, students will launch a 'baal akhbaar' or children's newspaper, following which, successful women from various fields will be invited to share their experiences and openly speak to the children.
