India’s COVID-19 Vaccination Drive Underway: AIIMS Chief SII CEO Receives The Shot

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the pan-India vaccination drive on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. via video conferencing.
Around 100 beneficiaries will get the vaccination shots at each session site on Saturday.
“This is the beginning of the end of COVID-19,” said Harsh Vardhan (Union Health Minister) a day before the launch of the vaccination drive.
With the world struggling with pandemic for a year now, India is all set to beat COVID-19 with its vaccination. The two vaccine candidates that have been approved in India are - Bharat Biotech’s ‘Covaxin’ and ‘Covishield’, that were developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca and are being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.

As one of the world's biggest vaccination drives against COVID-19 was launched in India, a sanitization worker became the first person to receive the vaccination shot at AIIMS Delhi. Meanwhile, the CEO of Serum Institue of India, Adar Poonawalla took it to Twitter. On Saturday morning, he wished success to the vaccination drive in India and also shared a video of himself taking the vaccine.
The first jabs have also been administered at centers in other cities across India such as - Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the country's massive coronavirus vaccination drive, which is expected to cover 300,000 frontline healthcare workers. He also asked the citizens not to pay heed to rumors about the vaccine and wear masks while getting vaccinated. PM Modi further added, India had a great track record in vaccine production and that 60 percent of children of the world get vaccines made in India.

World Coronavirus Update
Coronavirus cases rise unabated across the globe, with more than 94 million infected by the deadly contagion. While 67,318,670 have recovered, 2,016,529 have died so far. The US remains the worst-hit country with 24,099,511 cases, followed by India, Brazil, Russia, and the United Kingdom. However, in terms of the total number of active cases, the U.S. tops the charts, followed by France, Brazil, and Belgium.
