Chai with a biscuit or chai in a biscuit?

With the spreading awareness of an eco-friendly environment, Indians are doing up every ‘jugaad’ to ditch the use of plastic. Edible cutlery and juice in fruit shells were just becoming ordinary when the RS Pathy Nilgiri Tea Kiosk came up with another brilliant idea to “Say No to Plastic”.

When Mother Nature is punishing us for all the wrongs we have done to nature, we must adopt more such ways. This small tea stall on Madurai’s busy West Masi Street has caught up the attention of passers amid this Covid-19 situation and it is worth knowing more of it.

Whoop! To all the chai lovers out there, who think chai and biscuits go hand-in-hand, you are not the only ones to think so. Because a tiny tea kiosk in Madurai holds up just the same thoughts. Promoting zero waste, lesser use of plastic, and eco-friendly practices, RS Pathy Nilgiri Tea Kiosk has been serving tea (chai) in edible biscuit cups for the last one month.

The chocolate-flavored cups can hold 60 ml of hot tea for almost 10 minutes so, you have to sip your tea up before your cup melts down. The stall sells approximately 500 cups a day. And guess what? This edible teacup costs just Rs. 20.

Traditionally, RS Pathy and Co is a manufacturer of ayurvedic oils, balms, and pastes. But in the year 2013, the company came up with a new product, the Nilgiri Tea Powder. To promote the sales of tea leaves on a greater scale, a tea kiosk was opened that instantly became hit with the locals.

Although like every other tea stall, the owners had an option for opting “Kullad Cups”, they decided to do even better for their customers and nature together. In March 2020, when they came across the manufacturer of wafer products Edco India, they decided to launch these edible biscuit cups.

The city people are loving this new concept of serving tea. So, next time you visit Madurai, don’t forget to gulp these quirky teacups.

Because now you can have your tea and eat your cup too!
